Welcome to the Yorktown (NY) Environmental Blog

This Blog is an opportunity for all citizen of Yorktown and beyond to discuss and share our commitment to making changes in our lives, our neighborhoods, our town, our state, our county and the planet to be more responsible inhabitants

A new group has formed in Yorktown under the Sierra Club Cool Cities program to initially make our elected officials accountable for the environmental impact of all municipal decisions by first signing the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and joining ICLEI to demonstrate that actions must be taken to reduce our collective carbon footprint.

One of our first goals is to explore the community to find out what is currently being done, what programs are in place, what activities need more publicity, what problems we face, etc. We are working with town government to document our emissions footprint to set a baseline that we can then make a commitment to reduce and have a standard to be measured by.

Please join us by contributing your ideas and actions to this blog. We have just started to get organized and have been meeting bi-weekly. Please attend our meetings.

We have started a Google group as another forum for sharing information - http://groups.google.com/group/coolcityyorktown/

Thanks to Patty for bringing us all together and thanks to Jerry for starting this blog. Jerry says we need to make a commitment to changing our lives. One small thing we can all begin to do is to think about our driving - let's commit to eliminating unnecessary trips, carpool if possible and use public transportation whenever we can. In that spirit, I propose we make the small sacrifice of carpooling to our next meeting. I saw we had representatives from three families (including mine) who live within a few doors of the Baptist Church Road-Hunterbrook corner. A shared ride would have reduced our small but real production of greenhouse gases.

I'm game for car pooling. I wonder if our "transportation research team" can come up with fun ways to think about car pooling because in truth it's a nuisance and a hard-sell. It's too bad the old days of safe hitchhiking are gone. Would be useful to rekindle that culture right now. Residents on NYC did it during the transit strike years ago (decades?).

By the way, what happened to that solar powered stop sign at the intersection of Baldwin Rd. and that other road that I always think of as Baldwin but isn't.

And speaking of solar powered lights, there are some good ideas re solar powered Holiday lights in today's "Ask Umbra" column.

(I love this site.) Wish there were a way to suggest to our neighbors that moderation is the way to go with Xmas lights without getting branded a Scrooge.

Jerry and I were talking tonight about putting green hints/tips for everyday use in some public format- does the Pennysaver do public service messages? something like Xmas lights is a good point-some of our neighborhoods are very bright!Maybe a way to use the sharing/giving spirit of the Christmas Holiday- give back to the planet or something like that, maybe a green day in Yorktown between Christmas and New Year?
